Aim and Scope

The affections of soundscapes created by Antonio Vivaldi (The Four Seasons), the impressions imagined by Claude Debussy (Footsteps in the Snow), the mimesis of the ornithological sound records by Olivier Messiaen (Oiseaux Exotiques), the Altai-Sayan ecoregion expressed by Sainkho Namtchylak (Stepmother City) show that climate is present in the spectrum of styles and music history. Geographical characteristics, ecosystems and themes related to sets of specific atmospheric conditions that exert influence on the life are references observed in musical inspiration, that trigger thoughts and emotions in the listener.

However, this source of environmentalist incitement drastically change in the twenty-first century. Caused by overexploration and greenhouse gases-based economy, the planet Earth faces a climate emergency that is accelerating faster than scientists expected*, and whose situation may be irreversible for the next generations of the human societies**. Climate change entered the list of major global problems becoming subject and clause of world politic meetings (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, World Economic Forum). Efforts to mitigate and adapt for the impacts of the climate change should not be seen as a mere environmental problem, as it will be implemented with radical changes in the lifestyle and behavioural of humanity.

Following the tradition of focusing on human and society established for over a decade (Acculturation in a Changing Society, Music Perception, Where is Music Heading for?, Music and City, Sound-Timbre-Perception, Music and Therapy, Media and Technology, Music Theory, Music in Human Life, New Tendencies in Music) the Hisarlı Ahmet Symposium determines Music and Climate as the edition of the year 2022 .

Aims to face one of the greatest global challenges, seeking to understand the role of musicians in the face of climate problems and how music can help in this intergenerational change, the 12th Hisarlı Ahmet International Symposium are honored to invite all academitians to contribute in a multidisciplinary approach reinforcing critical communication within and across disciplines.
